The Attack on the Portobello:
Formerly known as Davy's, The Portobello Bar on South Richmond Street was taken over by rebels during the 1916 Easter Rising when the strategic location adjacent to the bridge was used to open fire on British soldiers attempting to enter the city centre through The Portobello Barracks.
The Bar and adjacent lock are reportedly haunted by the ghost of a vengeful lock keeper. It's said he liked his drink a little too much and that in the 19th century he was responsible for the sinking of a vessel at the lock he managed. Stories suggest that the shame and guilt became too much and led him to take his own life, others saying that he died in mysterious circumstances.
Either way his spirit has been spotted watching over the pub and lock.
